Golden Hour Colosseum
Photographed & edited by Riccardo Vincenzi. Artist's recommendation: 28" x 40" (70cm x 100cm) printed on aluminum.
When used in Rome, the Colosseum could hold an estimated 50,000 people in attendance, making it one of the largest and most important cultural monuments in Rome. Although much of the Colosseum has been ruined by earthquakes and robbers, it still stands in the literal center of modern Rome as an icon of Imperial Rome. The Colosseum is consistently regarded as one of the 7 Wonders of the World and is a truly breathtaking sight of architecture, engineering, and art.
Inaugurated by Emperor Titus in 80 AD. (the 834th year of Rome), with festivals that lasted 100 days, in the presence of the Emperor and a large multitude of spectators, the Colosseum hosted gladiator fights, hunts for wild beasts (venationes) and naumachia. The fights between gladiators lasted until 405 A.D., when they were suppressed by Emperor Honorius following the death of the monk Telemachus who, to prevent the fighting, entered the sand and was killed by the angry crowd. The Colosseum was also frequently host to executions, dramatic re-enactments of Roman history, and briefly, mock sea battles.
