The Netherlands is a country beset by water. 26% of the Netherlands is below sea level. It's a miracle that the city can exist above water at all, and this is thanks to centuries of Dutch engineers fighting against water with dams, water works and drainage projects. Much of The Netherlands was bombed or attacked by the Germans during WWII. However, this provided the Dutch with an opportunity to rebuild the country, resulting in distinct modern architecture.
