The Pantheon, translated to "Temple of All Gods", is a remarkable work of architecture and perhaps one of the most famous momuments on Earth. For over 2000 years, The Pantheon represented all of Roman culture; expression of glory, supreme engineering and architecture, and reverence for the Gods. A testament to this is the fact that the word "pantheon" is now used to describe the collection of gods in any religion.

Its history is deeply tied to the development of Rome, the Eternal City, itself. Commissioned by the first Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar, the Pantheon represents the beginning of the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace in the Roman Empire. Augustus originally dedicated The Pantheon to the seven planetary deities; the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

The original Pantheon was likely smaller, as it was rebuilt by the architect Hadrian between around 120 AD. Eventually, when the Roman empire was converted to Christianity, The Pantheon was abandoned by the first Christian emperors and ransacked by barbarians. Eventually, Byzantine Emperor Phocas donated The Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the temple to Santa Maria ad Martyres.
